Custom outdoor packing list generator

Our packing list generator builds a checklist from three choices: trip type (day hike, car camping or backpacking), number of nights (1 to 7), and season (summer, spring or fall, or winter). The list shows items that match your choices, scales the quantity of a few consumables by nights, and totals the typical weight of the items you check off where a maker states one. You can print the list from your browser.

How the packing list generator configures gear

Proper outdoor preparation eliminates the guesswork that leads to overloaded packs or forgotten items. Our camping and hiking checklists provide the foundation for this packing list generator. Instead of one static inventory, the generator shows the items that match three choices: trip type, number of nights, and season.

Items are filtered by trip type, season and minimum nights, and the quantity of a few consumables scales with the number of nights. Where a maker’s product page states a weight, the tool shows it as a typical weight.

Variable 1: Trip discipline and transport method

The trip type decides which items appear:

  • Day hike: A short-outing list with no nights setting. Review the complete requirements in our dedicated day hike checklist.
  • Backpacking: Adds overnight items for a trip carried on your back. Consult our detailed backpacking checklist.
  • Car camping: Designed for vehicle-supported campgrounds. Explore our complete camping checklist for campsite planning.

Variable 2: Duration and overnight calculations

Choose 1 to 7 nights for overnight trips (day hikes have no nights setting). Nights decide whether an item appears at all, because some items have a minimum number of nights. The quantity scales with nights for five consumables only: electrolyte packets, trail snacks, merino hiking socks, dehydrated meals and propane cylinders. The tool does not calculate food calories, water volume, fuel canister size or power bank capacity, so plan those for your own trip.

Variable 3: Seasonal conditions and temperature ranges

Choose summer, spring or fall, or winter. Each item is tagged with the seasons it applies to, so some items, such as traction gear, appear only in the colder seasons. The tool does not change the rating of any item, so check temperature ratings and R-values with the maker, and see our guide to sleeping pad R-value and our layering guide.

Understanding typical weights

A common frustration with outdoor checklists is the absence of weight benchmarks. The generator shows a typical weight only for items where a maker’s product page states one, such as a headlamp, trekking poles or a bear canister. Items without a stated weight, including tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, food and fuel, show a dash instead, and the packed-weight total adds up only the checked items that have a weight. Treat the total as a partial figure and weigh your real gear on a digital kitchen scale before loading your pack.

Printing and staging your packing manifest

Physical staging is the most reliable way to prevent missing equipment. After you set your trip details:

  • Print checklist button: Opens your browser’s print dialog. The print layout hides the trip controls and page furniture so the list prints on its own.
  • Checkbox layout: Every gear item has a checkbox. Stage your equipment on a clean floor or table and check each item off as it goes into your backpack or vehicle bin. Checked items are remembered on your device.
  • PDF: Most browsers let you choose to save as a PDF from the print dialog, which lets you reference the list at the trailhead without cell service.

Frequently asked questions

How does the packing list generator build a customized gear list?

The tool uses three choices: trip type (day hike, car camping or backpacking), number of nights (1 to 7), and season (summer, spring or fall, or winter). Each item in the tool's database is tagged with the trip types and seasons it applies to and the minimum number of nights it needs, and the list shows the items that match your choices.

How do trip duration and nights alter gear recommendations?

Nights decide which items appear, because some items only show up on overnight trips. The quantity also scales with nights for a small number of consumables: electrolyte packets, trail snacks, merino hiking socks, dehydrated meals and propane cylinders. The tool does not calculate calories, liters of water, fuel canister sizes or battery capacity.

Why do some items show a dash instead of a weight?

Weights appear only where a maker's product page states one. Items without a stated weight, such as tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, food and fuel, show a dash, and the packed-weight total adds up only the checked items that have a weight.

How does the season setting affect the generated list?

The season setting (summer, spring or fall, or winter) shows or hides items tagged for that season, such as traction gear for winter. It does not change the rating or specification of an item, so check the maker's temperature and R-value ratings yourself; see our guide to our sleeping pad R-value guide.

How do I print or save my customized packing checklist?

Use the Print checklist button, which opens your browser's print dialog. The print layout hides the trip controls and page furniture. Most browsers let you choose to save as a PDF from the print dialog. Items you check off are remembered on your device.

What safety items are included on the generated lists?

The tool's item data is based on the National Park Service 10 Essentials, and items in that group are flagged in the data. Which items appear still depends on your trip type, nights and season, so compare your list with the NPS 10 Essentials before you go.
